Several years ago our family decided to abandon all things "traditional" about Thanksgiving, and make it a day on which we all got to eat our favorite foods.

We each made a list of the things we most liked to eat and I made them all. The menu was a hodgepodge of a variety of dishes and looked nothing like a traditional Thanksgiving table. But we enjoyed the meal so much that a non-traditional Thanksgiving meal became our new holiday tradition.

Then, in May of 2020, my husband and I moved into a 5th-wheel RV and became full-time travelers. Nothing about our current lifestyle is traditional, including Thanksgiving. 😊

Regardless of what your Thanksgiving looks like this year, if you're thinking about a non-traditional menu, you're sure to find some gems in this list of 75 recipes.

A gold fork lifting a bite full of pork carnitas from a tray.

Instant Pot or Slow Cooker Carnitas Recipe

These carnitas have been a favorite meal around our home for a really long time. A few years ago I served them for Thanksgiving, right along side the turkey. At the end of the day, we had tons of leftover turkey, while only a few lonely pieces of carnitas remained. Next year, I skipped the turkey altogether and just doubled the amount of carnitas.

The meat is crispy on the outside, super flavorful, fall-off-the bone tender, and couldn't be easier to prepare.

The recipe makes enough for a crowd or for plenty of leftovers that you can use throughout the week or freeze for later, and includes instructions for making them in your slow cooker or instant pot.

Rebecca Blackwell in Door County, Wisconsin.

Hello! I'm Rebecca Blackwell, a writer, recipe developer, and food photographer. My husband and I are nomads without a home base but with many modes of transportation, namely an RV, a motorcycle, and a sailboat.

While I have cooked professionally, I am a home cook and baker who writes recipes for other home cooks and bakers. My home happens to have wheels, and occasionally sails, which should tell you that if the recipes work in my tiny kitchen, they will certainly work in yours.
