The story goes that the Manhattan cocktail originated around 1870 where it was concocted at a banquet for a presidential candidate.

As the banquet was held at The Manhattan Club, guest who first tasted it there, started asking for it by that name. But, sometimes stories often only have one foot in the truth and that' probably the case with this one. Versions of the classic Manhattan cocktail show up in various places around the same time.

So, who knows? And who cares? The Manhattan is well known for a reason. It's delicious in its simplicity, requiring just three ingredients plus a some brandied cherries if you like.
