Homemade Spice Mix Recipes
Having a handful of spice mixes in your spice cabinet is a quick way to add flavor to a dish. Making your own spice mixes will save you money and allow you to adjust each recipe to suit your personal tastes.
For each of the following homemade spice mixes, combine all the ingredients in a bowl and stir until thoroughly combined. Then store in an air tight container in a drawer or cabinent.
Thai Chili Spice Mix
- 1 tbsp ground cumin
- 1 tbsp salt
- 1 tbsp white pepper
- 1 tbsp ground black pepper
- 1 tbsp ground dried hot red Thai pepper
- 2 tbsp dried lemongrass (see note)
- 2 tbsp lime zest (zest 1 or 2 small limes)
- 2 tbsp garlic powder
- 2 tbsp ground ginger
- 4 tbsp toasted unsweetened coconut, ground in a food processor or spice mill
- 2 tbsp dark brown sugar
NOTES: If you can’t find dried lemongrass, use a fresh stalk. To prepare fresh lemongrass: Cut off the bottom three inches of the stalk and remove the tough outer leaves to reveal the tender inside of the stalk. Slice on a slight bias into thin pieces, and grind in a food processor, spice mill, or Vitamix (or other heavy-duty blender).
